Farzaneh Sadegh responded to journalists’ questions in a press conference presenting the ministry’s performance report under the 14th administration.
Qeshm Island Oil Pollution Resolved
Regarding oil pollution on Qeshm Island’s shores, Sadegh stated that while the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development is not the authority for determining the source of pollution, the Ports and Maritime Organization dispatched its specialized teams on August 10 after observing oil slicks on the water surface. In cooperation with relevant agencies, the pollution was resolved on August 17 with the coordination of the PMO.
Chabahar-Zahedan Railway: A Key Corridor Project
Describing the Chabahar-Zahedan railway construction and development project as one of the country’s most important corridor projects, the minister noted that President Pezeshkian has pursued its funding since the early weeks of his presidency. The project was originally scheduled for completion last year, but the war and subsequent events caused delays.
Stating that over 480 kilometers of rail-laying will connect the cities of Zahedan and Chabahar, Sadegh emphasized that this connection is being seriously pursued to establish links with Kazakhstan, China, Turkmenistan, Russia, Azerbaijan, India, Pakistan, and Turkey.
Cargo Clearance Facilitation Task Force
Referring to the ministry’s responsibility in the task force for facilitating cargo clearance from ports, the minister said that based on a cabinet decree, the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development was tasked with leading this task force to ensure, through the participation of all stakeholders, that essential and basic goods reach various parts of the country in the shortest possible time.
Sadegh noted that the private sector was not merely an executor in this process but also participated in decision-making, adding that this played an important role in facilitating cargo clearance during the 12-day war and the 40-day war.
Record-Breaking Cargo Operations
She continued that on certain days of the war, cargo unloading and loading records were broken even compared to non-war periods, and at southern ports, cargo clearance increased by over 100 percent.
Referring to Chabahar Port, Sadegh noted that through coordinated efforts, there were days when over a thousand trucks moved cargo out of the port.
The minister added that in the railway sector, both passenger and freight services, necessary measures were taken to ensure service continuity.
Kazakh Participation in Southern Ports
Referring to her visit to Kazakhstan, the minister stated that at the height of the 12-day war, coinciding with the incident at Shahid Rajaei Port, land was allocated to Kazakhstan at Shahid Rajaei Port through arrangements and negotiations.
Sadegh added that Kazakh participation in the country’s southern ports carries a clear message, demonstrating that the cargo flow entering through this route secures and stabilizes access to open waters via the country’s south.
Increased Cargo Outflow from Northern Ports
The minister acknowledged that the blockade imposed and the closure of the strait have affected the country’s transit, resulting in reduced transit volumes.
However, she added that imports and exports, particularly in the railway sector between countries, have increased, and cargo outflow from northern ports has grown by over 100 percent.
